Gov. Newsom will tour U.S.VETS Long Beach and meet with local mayors about building more affordable housing.
Gov. Gavin Newsom will be in Long Beach today to see how the Villages at Cabrillo works and meet with mayors about building more affordable housing.
Newsom’s office said that the governor and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia will tour the Villages to see how formerly homeless people, particularly veterans, are being housed and provided services at the same time. The nonprofit Century Villages at Cabrillo houses more than 1,000 people on any given night in transitional and permanent housing, while U.S. VETS and other nonprofits provide services.
Newsom said his proposed budget would provide $1.7 billion in incentives to communities that plan for building more affordable housing. At the same time, he filed a lawsuit against Huntington Beach for not providing that plan or housing.
So after the tour of the Villages, the governor will meet with mayors of cities that currently are out of compliance with state law, and how the state would be able to assist in providing more housing. Top staff from the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency as well as the Department of Housing and Community Development will attend that meeting to answer the mayors’ specific questions and concerns.
Both the tour and the meeting are closed to the public.
