Prescott, Ariz. – Gorman & Company and U.S.VETS are proud to announce that they have been selected to develop supportive housing for senior, homeless, and at-risk veterans at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Fort Whipple campus in Prescott, Arizona. Together the partnership will design, develop, construct and manage affordable supportive housing units to serve Northern Arizona veterans.
“Gorman & Company is excited to partner with U.S.VETS in developing much needed supportive housing for our veterans on the Fort Whipple Campus. The master plan includes rehabilitation of six very special, former Army Cavalry Hospital officer’s buildings, and the new construction of additional affordable housing units,” notes Sally Schwenn, Market President.
The VA Northern Arizona Health Care System’s Fort Whipple campus will be expanded to include the development of affordable housing units on 3 acres of vacant land located at the southwestern portion of the campus, adjacent to the officer’s buildings. The Arizona Department of Housing (ADOH) has set aside $3M in Housing Trust Funds for gap financing and, as a Public Housing Authority for HUD in Yavapai County, they have set aside 75 tenant based HUD-VASH vouchers. The campus will offer wraparound services including workforce development, case management, counseling and therapeutic services, and health care in partnership with the VA – and ensure expanded services for Veterans in the community, both on site and through U.S.VETS—Prescott’s Liberty Pointe campus. This effort will have a significant impact on increasing the affordable housing inventory in Northern Arizona.
“Together, we will honor the history of this land and vibrance of Prescott, a true frontier community,” says Carole Benedict, Executive Director, U.S.VETS—Prescott. “There is no better tribute to those who served at Fort Whipple than to use this land to provide a home, a community and a stable future for our veterans today.”
The partnership will bring the strengths of both Gorman and U.S.VETS-Prescott together to benefit Northern Arizona veterans. As a partnership, Gorman and U.S.VETS, will maximize participation of Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (“SDVOSB”), Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (“VOSB”), and other local businesses in development and construction. Gorman & Company brings key expertise as one of the nation’s largest developers of affordable, mixed-income, and workforce housing with 9,000+ units developed across the nation, and over 1,000 in Arizona. U.S.VETS has served the Prescott, Arizona community since 2003, and is the largest veteran housing and supportive service provider – in Northern Arizona and nationally. With the support of the Prescott community, we will honor the rich history of the land and provide our Veterans with the care that they deserve.
“U.S.VETS is proud to partner with Gorman and Company to ensure that our veterans can access housing and supportive services when they come home,” said Stephen Peck, USMC, President & CEO, U.S.VETS. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with the Department of Veterans Affairs on this, our second Historic Rehabilitation project, on a historic VA campus.”
